URL's Getting Eaten by Nagios 1.1

Hi Folks:

I have nagios 1.1 on a couple of boxes and have a ping test defined in the 
checkcommands file that will wrap the output in a URL using urlize.   
Basically the URL is broken with characters being eliminated.

For example we get lovely things like the following
TEST :a 
href=https://localhost/cgi-bin/traceroute.cgi?test/a 

This is after removing <> from the illegal character specification in 
nagios.cfg.

What could I possibly be missing?
