new install, ping services not working

Don't you love when someone answers their own question? =)
Some clarity hit me, so I started looking at the sample configs, and working
on things from the CLI.
In short, yes I had things configured wrong.  I was giving no arguments to
check_ping .  check_ping was also not operating properly.

In short, I fixed my config (based on the sample), installed a copy of
check_ping from an RPM, and made it suid because my host doesn't allow
non-priveleged users to ping.

Wala my hosts are up!  Thanks for the pointers to all who gave some.
