parent hosts

Hey guys, 

I'm new on this list. I have a question about parent hosts. Assuming we have 
a router with at least 5 different subnets. How are we suppose to configure 
each host's parent? Coz here is what I am thinking now. 

Router/switch has 5 interfaces w/ different subnets. Every hosts on each 
subnet points to the proper ip address of the router or switch as its 
gateway address. I will use each gateway ip address as parents. But what 
will happen here(just a guess), is that, I will have 5 different icons on 
the status 3d but in reality, it's just only 1 box. 

Let me know the proper way. 

And, how do I implement network topology learning? What are the things I 
need on the nagios server? What things do I need to enable on the 
workstations?
