Nagios - Host/Service Notifications

I am sure I am missing something completely obvious. My problem is that
I have a service check that fails (as it should, the service check is
down), and so the process goes ahead and checks the host availability,
which fails as well and immediately generates a notification.

My service has a max_check_attempts of 3, with a retry interval of 1
(minute).

My host has a max_check_attempts of 10.

When I look at the log, the 10 host check attempts happen in less than 2
seconds. I need to know what I can do to check out the service, but
wait several minutes before sending a notification. Should I leave the
host check command blank for this particular scenario? And will that
have the desired effect?

Slightly more information:

The service check is an HTTP service check on a host on the other side
of a firewall, the host check command is a tcp80 check (so it is
redundant) due to the fact that we do not allow return ICMP at this
time...

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
