Nagios causing signal 11 on apache.

Ah.  Important detail.  ;)

Does it continue to sig11 if you do _not_ check HTTPS on machine B?  Ie,
only test HTTP?

Big difference, though - sshd is behaving as it's supposed to, and Apache
is definately _not_.
