nagios 1.1 'hanging'

I find that when I add a bunch of new services to my nagios
implementation, that it just 'hangs' and the visible symptom is that no
longer processes performance data -- I have gaps in my graphs.

Also, an output of ps -aux shows a lot of processes like:

nagios 32460 0.0 0.2 3292 2216 ? S 15:27 0:00 [nagios]
nagios 32463 0.0 0.2 3292 2216 ? S 15:27 0:00 [nagios]
nagios 32467 0.0 0.2 3292 2216 ? S 15:27 0:00 [nagios]
nagios 32491 0.0 0.2 3292 2216 ? S 15:27 0:00 [nagios]
nagios 32494 0.0 0.2 3292 2216 ? S 15:27 0:00 [nagios]
nagios 32510 0.0 0.2 3292 2216 ? S 15:27 0:00 [nagios]
nagios 32515 0.0 0.2 3292 2216 ? S 15:27 0:00 [nagios]
nagios 32518 0.0 0.2 3292 2216 ? S 15:27 0:00 [nagios]
nagios 32555 0.0 0.2 3292 2216 ? S 15:27 0:00 [nagios]
nagios 32558 0.0 0.2 3292 2216 ? S 15:27 0:00 [nagios]
nagios 32561 0.0 0.2 3292 2216 ? S 15:27 0:00 [nagios]
nagios 32564 0.0 0.2 3292 2216 ? S 15:27 0:00 [nagios]
nagios 711 0.0 0.2 3296 2208 ? S 15:28 0:00 [nagios]
nagios 712 0.0 0.0 1368 476 ? S 15:28 0:00
/usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_ping -H 10.0.0.5 -w 3000.0,80% -c
5000.0,90%

When I first start nagios, there are MANY more check_xyz (eg. check_ping
processes). As time goes on, eventually there is only 1 active check_ping
command and the rest are just [nagios] processes.

Thanks in advance,

Brian
