Checking keywords in logs on MS servers

I would like to check events logs for specific error codes on windows
2003 servers in DMZ, but I want to keep firewall ports to a minimum, so
far I have 22, 80 and 443 open, I may consider 161 once I study the
implications.
 
Anybody ever run into a requirement.
