Disabling active host checks at all

Hi,

We are building a distributed monitoring system with nagios. At the moment
there are about 500 hosts. However, the main nagios host doesn't have access
to any of the remote hosts (all the networks are firewalled). However,
sometimes nagios tries to check the host by itself, and of course test fails
with time out.
Is there any way of disabling it?

Kind regards
Pshemko
