Gentoo + Nagios 1.2 oddity

Hello - I'm migrating my Nagios installation over from a Debian box to a
gentoo box. The compile/install/setup went great, and all of my service
checks are working except for the check_ping's. This is what I get back
when I run a check_ping:

libexec # ./check_ping -H 192.168.1.3 -w 300,20% -c 400,50%
PING OK - WARNING: failed to install socket filter
 : Protocol not available
Packet loss = 0%, RTA = 0.26 ms

I get the same message when I run a manual ping from the command line:

libexec # ping -c4 192.168.1.3
PING 192.168.1.3 (192.168.1.3) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 192.168.1.3: icmp_seq=1 ttl=128 time=0.191 ms
WARNING: failed to install socket filter
: Protocol not available
64 bytes from 192.168.1.3: icmp_seq=2 ttl=128 time=0.180 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.3: icmp_seq=3 ttl=128 time=0.171 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.3: icmp_seq=4 ttl=128 time=0.180 ms

--- 192.168.1.3 ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 4 received, 0% packet loss, time 3000ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.171/0.180/0.191/0.015 ms

So it appears that all of the pings are actually getting through, but there
is something hung up in the network stack.

I realize that this is not specifically a nagios issue, but I thought
someone on the list may have seen this before.

Thanks!
-Erik
