Nagiosmap Woes

Has anyone had success with the Nagiosmap add-on?
I'm running Nagios 1.2 and I've downloaded the nagiosmap.pl script and
installed the necessary Perl modules. Nagiosmap starts up OK, and I open
the hosts.cfg and hostextinfo.cfg, but that's as far as it gets. It just
sits there with a message that reads 'Please wait while reading
hostextinfo.cfg ...'.
In the terminal window from which I started the app I see the following:

[root at monitor2 bin]# ./nagiosmap.pl

It just hangs here until I exit, then it adds the following:

Tk::Error:

data in image file "?N

Anyone have an idea what I might be doing wrong?
