Nagios Causes Network Congestion ?

Network Guru's,

I'm running nagios 1.1, configured to monitor 100+ hosts. One thing I've
noticed is that it made my network (100mbit) crawl to the extent that when
I open my samba share folder it takes about 20 secs. to open it. When I
stopped the nagios daemon, I can open it in a snap.

Any suggestions why, how to overcome this?
