Error Using Mysql Database

I have followed each step in the database configuration but am still
getting the following error:

[1069287426] Nagios 1.1 starting... (PID=12715)
[1069287426] Finished daemonizing... (New PID=12716)
[1069287426] Error: Could not connect to MySQL database '' on host ''
using username '' and password ''. Status data will not be saved!
<snip>

I have defined the correct database info in the appropriate sections of
cgi.cfg and resource.cfg and also commented out the corresponding file
definitions:
# Disable if using MySQL
#status_file=/usr/local/nagios-1.1/var/status.log
#comment_file=/usr/local/nagios-1.1/var/comment.log
#downtime_file=/usr/local/nagios-1.1/var/downtime.log
#state_retention_file=/usr/local/nagios-1.1/var/status.sav

What am I missing? I verified that my database user can connect to the
local database. The user has full database privs. I created all the
tables using the supplied mysql script.

I build nagios using the following config:
./configure --prefix=/usr/local/nagios-1.1
--with-mail=/usr/sbin/sendmail --with-init-dir=/etc/init.d
--with-lockfile=/var/run/nagios/nagios.lock --with-mysql-xdata
--with-file-perfdata --with-mysql-lib=/usr/lib/mysql/mysql
--with-mysql-inc=/usr/include/mysql --with-gd-lib=/usr/lib
--with-gd-inc=/usr/include

Thanks,
CC
