Problem with submitting external commands

Hello all,

How can I submit an external command from the command line?  Nagios 
ignors the result of the following command.  What am I doing wrong?  Is 
this not proper?

/bin/echo -e "bk_server\tBackup\t$RET_VAL\t$MSG\n" >>nagios.cmd
