Dennis,

it could be that you have some white space or a control char at the head
of your file that is causing it to give you that error.

FWIW, here is a sample from a working hostextinfo.cfg that I have
running:

define hostextinfo{
       host_name       gw
       #notes_url      hostinfo.pl?host=gw
       icon_image      my_router.png 
       icon_image_alt  gw.neitzert.lan
       vrml_image      my_router.png
       statusmap_image myrouter.gd2
       2d_coords       100,250
       3d_coords       100.0,50.0,75.0
       }
