Host without service ?

Hi all,

I tried to monitor some hosts without defining any service, just using the
check-host-alive command, but the check is still "PENDING" after a very long
time, and no check has been done. Is this normal ? Is it possible to monitor
the "alive" or "dead" of the host state without defining a service for it ?
