inaccurate ping results / packet loss

I've been running Nagios for a couple of months now without any major
issues, however, I do get an awful lot of packet loss alerts - averaging
about 20 per hour. I think this data is bogus, especially since I started
running clean pings to the same hosts from the Nagios server. In several
instances Nagios was showing a packet loss alarm on a device that I had
been pinging clear for over an hour - and again, this is all from the same
machine, so it can't be loss related to processor load.

Has anyone else seen this issue? I'm really curious as to what the deal
is, because as it stands now, Nagios seems pretty unreliable.

I'm running Nagios 1.0b6 on an OSX/Darwin/Apache server. Monitoring 157
devices, ping only. Ping service definition is all default values.

Thanks for any help.
