How to Implement SMS Alert

I tried useing the gnokii command 'echo "hello" | gnokii --sendsms
999999999. That works from console, but not nagios ;) 
all permissions etc are correct, (yes I know gnokii needs sudo or suid.)
 I will try debugging it.
