status.log and nagios.log/status.sav

Question?

in the process check with the check_nagios function enabled in cgi.cfg, it defaults to /usr/local/nagios/var/status.log.  However I have no such thing.  I touched a file, but nagios deletes it upon exit.  I have two choices.  a status.sav file and nagios.log.  Am I missing something?
