My guess is that the ping problems you describe are unrelated to the load
on the Nagios box.  All the Nagios plugis are lightweight and shouldn't
throw too much of load.  I suspect that there are network issues between
your Nagios box and the hosts you are monitoring.  Take a close look at
the load on the Nagios box next time you see this phenomenon.
