SV: Nagios vs. .NET's MOM

MOM is, if I remember correct, based on products from NetIQ (www.netiq.com).

I had it demonstrated some time ago, and it all seems very neat and
"Microsoft" like, - click here, click there, and you have sorts of wonderful
statistics, graphs, logs, alarms etc ...

It runs only on Windows. It is focused on monitoring Microsoft products,
which of course is OK if you live in an all-microsoft environment. There are
third party plugins, - eq. Compaq for monitoring their hardware. I guess
with some work you can have it monitor the same stuff you monitor with
Nagios.

The pricing is hilarious compared to Nagios.
The user interface is good compared to Nagios ;-)
The hardware requirements is higher than Nagios.

The advantage of MOM is the user friendliness, the (main) disadvantage is
the high costs.
If you are new to Nagios, you must prepare yourself for some hard work, and
you will need to add other products if you require alarms sent to pagers or
cell phones. If you hang in, the product is great, and very flexible.

You should consider getting a trial copy if Operations Manager, if you need
to do serious testing. I took my boss to the demo, we are now running Nagios
on a small Linux box ;-)

Hi all,

Apparantly .NET contains a product called MOM - Microsoft Operations
Management. This product can provide real-time monitoring & reports etc etc
of windows servers.

My manager put a hold on ordering the server that we are purchasing for
nagios and asked me to look into MOM. I'm looking for ... comparative
information of the two products. I have a preference of which product i'd
like to put in, but I have to build a case. Can anyone here comment on
these two products?

p.s. I just found out that the licence for MOM is per processor
monitored... so if we want to monitor our lab PCs, we'd have to pay
1000*the licence fee ... which is low-three figure price...
