And what do the first 10 or so lines of your hosts.cfg look like? Please
post them to the list, it would be far more helpful than just saying "it
doesnt work... why?"

Subject: [Nagios-users] question of lock file..

hi all
i installed nagios 1.0b6 version,and configure it..when i start nagios...it
reports :No lock file found in /usr/local/nagios/var/nagios.lock
i type /usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios -v ,it shows these debugs:
Nagios 1.0b6
Copyright (c) 1999-2002 Ethan Galstad (nagios at nagios.org)
Last Modified: 09-15-2002

Reading configuration data...

Error: Could not add object property in file
'/usr/local/nagios/etc/hosts.cfg' on line 3.

***> One or more problems was encountered while processing the config
files...

Check your configuration file(s) to ensure that they contain valid
directives and data defintions. If you are upgrading from a previous
version of Nagios, you should be aware that some variables/definitions
may have been removed or modified in this version. Make sure to read
the HTML documentation on the main and host config files, as well as
the
'Whats New' section to find out what has changed.

...
anyone can help me?
thanks a lot
cocu
