the background image needs to be in gd2-format (see pngtogd2 in your
gd-installation and its covered in the docs for the cgi.cfg)

you can define the hosts position with x/y-coordinates.
i use
xedtemplate_config_file=/usr/local/nagios/etc/hostextinfo.cfg
in cgi.cfg

a host-entry in hostextinfo.cfg looks like:
define hostextinfo{ 
	host_name NAME 
	icon_image IMAGE.GIF (used in other webinterface files)
	statusmap_image IMAGE.PNG (used for the statusmap)
	2d_coords	X-Coord, Y-Coord
} 

btw - the backtgroundimage-feature doesn't work for me.
