check_ping vs check_fping

Hello all,

I looked around the archives and could not really find an answer to this, but forgive me if it is there and I missed it.  Is there any advantage to using fping vs ping, or vice versa?  I have been having some problems with what I think is service or host checks hanging up all of the service and host checks use check_ping.
