Problems with a service and hostgroups

Hello,
I'm getting somewhat of an odd error:
when I configure a service to use a hostgroup_name, and that hostgroup
contains more than one server I get 
"Invalid max_attempts, check_interval, retry_interval, or
notification_interval value for service 'service description' on
'hostname'
when only 1 host exists in the hostgroup all is well.
Also when I do multiple host_name entries it works without a hitch
(which is not practical, with all the hosts needed).
Any ideas where to look?
