Subject: [Nagios-users] Passive checks

I think there was a previous email, possibly today, that detailed the
service.cfg setting for a passive service check, with a small
'passive_check_fail' script. I seem to have deleted it, and there do not
seem to be any archives of the messages on Sourceforge. Does anyone still
have the message, and if so, could they forward it to me?

Thanks a bunch.
Tom

PS A suggestion to have Sourceforge archive the messages might be
appropriate? I thought they were, I'm sure I remember browsing them
previously, but I can't find them now.

I've been running nagios since last week monitoring various boxes. Today
they are idle and I notice the load for one particular linux server is 1.06,
1.07, 1.01. Yet if I log onto that box and do an uptime it comes back
0,0,0.. If I do a check_nrpe -c check_load it also comes back 0,0,0.. Why
does the web page say 1.06,1.07,1.01? Why doesn't that update?

Thanks that worked. But still the complete messages doesn't show up. I
recall seeing some earlier posts about a buffer that needs to be tweaked to
increase the size of the $OUTPUT$ field. Can someone post that for me, since
I couldn't find it.
BTW, is the archives on sourceforge down?

Good morning,

	No, NSClient cannot grok the event logs. i use BackLogNT as
Gopinath uses NTsyslog. The author of NSClient has had a project going for
months now to get this info but i have seen no updates and am unsure if he
will complete it.

	Additionally, for the truncated messages try replacing the sprintf
(at least i think that is what is used) commands and single-quotes in
misccommands with echo -e and double-quotes ala:

	command_line	/bin/echo -e "***** Nagios *****\n\nNotification
Type: $NOTIFICATIONTYPE$\nHost: $HOSTNAME$\nState: $HOSTSTATE$\nAddress:
$HOSTADDRESS$\nInfo: $OUTPUT$\n\nDate/Time: $DATETIME$\n" | /bin/mail -s
'Host $HOSTSTATE$ alert for $HOSTNAME$!' $CONTACTEMAIL$
	}

hope this helps,
dean

I am not sure if NSClient could do that. That's why we are using the
NTSyslog to send in the alerts to a syslog server. If NSClient could do this
it would be great, no need to duplicate the logs on 2 servers!

Interesting. Always great to have options.

Does NSClient have a way to grok the NT alerts and report on them?

Actually, Nagios doesn't care what kind of address you specify for
the host. Nagios simply treats it as a string and passes it off the
plugins for their use. There's nothing stopping anyone from putting
a MAC address in that field, multiple IP addresses, GPS coordinates,
or text directions on where to find the server. :-)

You could set the address field to be "192.168.1.2,192.168.0.5" to
indicate that the host had two IPs. Your host check command (and
service plugins) would then have to properly parse the address field
to pick out the individual addresses to be checked.

Nagios runs as a foreground process if you don't specify the -d
option on the command line. BTW, someone is already doing this:

Yes , I have allready made a script that takes 2 ip addresses and then
returns status based on the status of checks through both addresses. But
when i tried to give the arguements from check_comand in host definition
(check_multiple_ips!192.168.1.100,192.168.1.2), it gave errors and
nagios did not start. Only after i put the arguements in checkcomand
definition of that command ,it worked.
Cant we give arguements from the checkcommand in host definition whereas
we can give them in service definitions.

First, make sure you've cleared out any cached data -- make distclean
should do it.

After rebuilding, if you have the same problem, try running with
'--verbose'. I think that will show the actual command that is run.

Also, if still failing do

	grep PING sf/nagiosplug/build-redhat/plugins/config.h

and report those pieces of information to the list (after substituting
the path to your build emvironment, of course)

Hallo there,

I have a very simple question, I hope nobody minds ... I know how to
schedule downtime with the web interface, i.e. manually. I'd like to
know how to schedule downtime automatically. I'd like a file where I
can say "downtime for service X is timeperiod T." Does such a file
exist? Or do I have to write to the command file, like with external
commands? If yes, what is the syntax?

Best regards,

As I've said before, if one uses DNS names (and avoids defining the IP
addresses in the host definitions), this should take care of it.

The tradeoff, of course, is that if none of your many redundant DNS servers
(;-) is available, you'll start to have other problems. (You could install
a caching server on the Nagios host, which would help minimize risk.)

You're new to the list, aren't you? ;)

I just answered this very question last Wednesday. But here it is again:

Here's how we're doing it. The snippet from checkcommands.cfg (note the
linewrap):

define command{
        command_name    check_nt_disk
        command_line    $USER1$/check_nt -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -p 1248 \
        -v USEDDISKSPACE -s $ARG1$ -l $ARG2$ -w $ARG3$ -c $ARG4$
        }

And the checks for the C and D drives in services.cfg:

define service{
        host_name                       itdmlw04
        use                             icmp
        service_description             Space on C
        contact_groups                  windows-admins
        check_command                   check_nt_disk!XXXXX!C!80!90
        }

define service{
        host_name                       itdmlw04
        use                             icmp
        service_description             Space on D
        contact_groups                  windows-admins
        check_command                   check_nt_disk!XXXXX!D!80!90
        }

(Password to access NSClient is obscured by 'XXXXX'.)

Does this help? (Yes, I'm using the template-based object file
configuration. You should, too.) You might be partial to using
'generic-service' instead of 'icmp'.

Subject: [Nagios-users] schedule downtime

Hallo there,

I have a very simple question, I hope nobody minds ... I know how to
schedule downtime with the web interface, i.e. manually. I'd like to
know how to schedule downtime automatically. I'd like a file where I
can say "downtime for service X is timeperiod T." Does such a file
exist? Or do I have to write to the command file, like with external
commands? If yes, what is the syntax?

Best regards,

Marko Riedel

I believe you are referring to OpenView, an HP product, not
the relatively new open-source OpenNMS... <http://www.opennms.org>

On the left-side menu, click on 'Downtime'. When you see your scheduled
downtime, click on the trash can icon under 'Actions'. When you're prompted
to confirm the cancellation, click on 'Commit'.

If the host/service in question will *always* be down between certain times,
perhaps you'd rather make the necessary adjustment in timeperiods.cfg. This
has been discussed before.

If you'd rather send commands from a script directly into Nagios, you'll
have to send the appropriate output to nagios.cmd. I don't recall the
formatting offhand, but this should be in either the mail archives or the
FAQ.

I think I will have to face to the same checks, soon.
And let me ask you this, and sorry if you've already make an answer..
Some people are talking about NSClient. Where should I get documentation
on=20

How to get the NSClient ?
How to make is works on NT Servers/Workstations ?

On another hand, I'll have to monitor and trap SNMP on a Lucent switch,
where could I get any good documentations on this ?
I think I should first have a look to the check_snmp first, but if you
have any infos to get more quicker system to work.

Thanks for your help

    You're new to the list, aren't you? ;)
    =20
    I just answered this very question last Wednesday. But here it is
    again:
    =20
    Here's how we're doing it. The snippet from checkcommands.cfg (note
    the linewrap):
    =20
    define command{
            command_name    check_nt_disk
            command_line    $USER1$/check_nt -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -p 1248 \
            -v USEDDISKSPACE -s $ARG1$ -l $ARG2$ -w $ARG3$ -c $ARG4$
            }
    =20
    And the checks for the C and D drives in services.cfg:
    =20
    define service{
            host_name                       itdmlw04
            use                             icmp
            service_description             Space on C
            contact_groups                  windows-admins
            check_command                   check_nt_disk!XXXXX!C!80!90
            }
    =20
    define service{
            host_name                       itdmlw04
            use                             icmp
            service_description             Space on D
            contact_groups                  windows-admins
            check_command                   check_nt_disk!XXXXX!D!80!90
            }
   =20
    =20
    (Password to access NSClient is obscured by 'XXXXX'.)
    =20
    Does this help? (Yes, I'm using the template-based object file
    configuration. You should, too.) You might be partial to using
    'generic-service' instead of 'icmp'.

Into the service.cfg file you declare the services you need, and there
you attach a check_period to this service.
Note that the time period will defined into the etc/timeperiod.cfg of
course.

This is how I would set serveral checks for a "service" according to
daily production, as some days got some peak of production.

I would believe that he is speaking of OpenNMS. This description seems =
to mirror the experience that I had after installing the product on a =
test server. Granted, this was before the v.1.0 release a few months =
ago, although I doubt that much has been done since to free up =
resources. The only thing that I might disagree with is the 'nearly =
worthless' tag. If you're in possession of a box big and beefy enough to =
run OpenNMS, I think it would serve as a useful tool.

The biggest advantage of Nagios over Openview is

1: The price (Nagios is free)
2: Implementation time (openview has an impl. time of 1 year+ an Nagios 3
monts+) (Depending on the number of hosts)

However it depends on how many hosts you want to monitor, Openview (or
Tivoly) is more suitable for Large networks (10.000 or more host). It also
depends on wat you want to monitor, if you for example want make your own
SAP plugins... this is not possible with Vanatagepoint or Tivoly.

But the 2 points (point 1 mostly) where the once we made the desision on.

(Our network has 89 hosts and 651 services to check)

Hello there,

I tried this already. I have

define service{
	use				nsca-service
	service_description		SOMENAME
	host_name			somehost
	check_period			workhours
	notification_period		workhours
	freshness_threshold		1200
}

(this is a passive check) but for some reason NAGIOS traces the
service as CRITICAL during non-workhours and the trends CGI shows
non-workhours marked as RED (CRITICAL).

I think I really do need to schedule downtime using the downtime
feature instead of merely setting the check- and notification
periods. How to do this?

Best regards,

Nah if I was speaking of HPOV I have much 'fonder' terminology for that
particular piece of code ;) I was probably rather harsh in my wording.
But OpenNMS and Nagios have somewhat different ends, OpenNMS means to be
like HPOV, a management (and secondarily monitoring) platform. Nagios is a
monitoring and alerting platform.

Occasionally, service detail information for various printers disappears and
then comes back shortly thereafter.
Has anyone observed this behavior?
