In trying to setup a wildcard hostgroup, I came across this situation.
Using

define host {
        use                     generic-host
        host_name               printer2
        alias                   Printer #2
        address                 192.168.1.101
        check_command           check-host-alive
        max_check_attempts      10
        notification_interval   480
        notification_period     workhours

        register 0
}

and

define hostgroup {
        name            everything
        hostgroup_name  everything
        alias           Everything
        contact_groups  admins
        members         *
}

nagios seems to pull in all host objects, even though some are unregistered:

[root at localhost] $ /etc/init.d/nagios check

     Check your configuration file(s) to ensure that they contain valid
     directives and data defintions. If you are upgrading from a previous
     version of Nagios, you should be aware that some variables/definitions
     may have been removed or modified in this version. Make sure to read
     the HTML documentation on the main and host config files, as well as
the
     'Whats New' section to find out what has changed.
