Question about host dependency.

Yes, if the switch will respond to some sort of network check.  Typically
the network devices we're interested in use TCP/IP, so something as basic as
check_ping would suffice.

If the network device isn't itself addressable, then you might have to do
some pondering if out-of-band checking is an option (eg, an expect script
wrapped around tip).
