I had the same problem some days ago. I solved it changing de Nagios code to ignore slashes at the end of plugin output when reading retention status data(IIRC at xsddefault_read_status_data function). I was searching for a better way to solve this, but now that you face the same behavior I'll let the Nagios development list know, they can help us to solve this issue.

I believe that you can avoid slash-ending plugin outputs meanwhile.
