The 'alias' variable

Since the 'alias' variable doesn't fill any logical function what so 
ever, I was wondering what the opinions are on dropping it from the list 
of required variables?

I'd be happy to supply a patch for making it so (while maintaining the 
GUI functionality, ofcourse).
