I compiled the v2 on the server and copied the check_nrpe to the libexec dir. This is from the same compile as the clients. Other than the check_nrpe does the Nagios Server need anything else running that perhaps I've not run? The clients have the /usr/local/nagios/nrpe -c /usr/local/nagios/nrpe.cfg -d for the client. What kind of Nagios nrpe are you using on both client (nagios server) side and on server (nrpe daemon on monitored server) side? I had same problem before, and it was due to nrpe v2 on monitored servers and its requirement to encrypt data with ssl. So I compiled nrpe v2 with ssl enabled on both sides and it is running.
