Debian packages and the source tarball can be downloaded from: https://www.nsca-ng.org/ As far as I can tell, it works very well, and it has all the features I wanted the 1.0 release to have. The client features include: * Accepts all input, command line arguments, and configuration files accepted by the send_nsca binary provided with the original NSCA package. * Supports submission of arbitrary Nagios commands (not just check results) of arbitrary size. That is, NSCA-ng could be used to submit downtimes or acknowledgements, for example. * Optional random delay before the client connects to the server. * Messages can optionally be sent to syslog(3). * Should run on any non-ancient Unix-like system. The server features include: * TLS encryption and shared-secret authentication with client-specific passwords. * Fine-grained authorization control. * Very good performance and scalability. The next step will be to tackle some of my wish list items: https://www.nsca-ng.org/documentation/todo.html If you happen to be interested in any of those (or other features), I'd be happy about any feedback you may have. Everyday some of my ConSol Labs check_logfiles checks being to timeout. They run every 4mins and normally complete in a few seconds at most. The screenshot below shows one such example that has been timing out for over two hours now: The strange behaviour is that if I carry out any of the following 3 things the check runs fine and the CRITICAL state goes to GREEN, or I can simply run the check without any kind of timeout - as mentioed this check should never take 10 secs to complete. In fact changing the timeout value to 45 secs makes absolutely no difference at all. Restarting Nagios makes no difference. 1) In Nagios, "Re-schedule the next check of this service" - the check runs just fine. 2) Run the check from the command line on the Nagios server - the check runs just fine. 3) Run the check from the command line on the target server - the check runs just fine. Has anyone come across this kind of behaviour before, or any ideas what might be wrong? Thanks - Julian. It took a bit of tweaking, but now it works reliably. Put your Nagios server and monitored clients into Permissive mode, run all the plugins that you need, and capture the log output from /var/log/audit/audit.log. Simply pass the relevant lines from audit.log through the audit2allow tool, which will generate the relevant SELinux policy. It might take several iterations of this to capture all possible violations of SELinux policy but once you've caught them all you can easily generate policy files for Nagios, NRPE, NSCA and other plugins which can then be deployed and installed on all your machines. The end result is a fairly permissive SELinux policy *for Nagios* but still far better than not having SELinux at all. The big system impact is forking the nagios core, not the sub shell. If you really want to boost your installations performance wait for Nagios 4 or use Mod-Gearman which are both worker based. You could point to it using the --with-openssl= option; and depending on some details, you might also have to specify additional LDFLAGS. However, if you just run ./build-aux/make-openssl before calling ./configure, everything should work out of the box. Note that this only builds the client. To also build the server, you could run: ./build-aux/make-confuse ./build-aux/make-openssl ./configure --enable-server Holger From ae at op5.se Sun Mar 17 00:32:37 2013 From: ae at op5.se (Andreas Ericsson) Date: Sun, 17 Mar 2013 00:32:37 +0100 Subject: Revamp of lib/worker.c Message-ID: <51450115.2020605@op5.se> I know it's fairly late in the dev cycle, but the current status of lib/worker.c simply isn't maintainable enough. The following commit lets send_nsca ignore such trailing newlines: https://www.nsca-ng.org/cgi-bin/repository/nsca-ng/commit/?id=521c7d15 However, using "echo -n -e [...]" should do the trick. I have a fairly large distributed monitoring setup currently in pilot that's monitoring a variety of devices at remote branch sites. The hostnames at all these sites are very similar since the naming standard includes the branch ID at the start of the hostname. What we are seeing is Nagios' scheduler is using a sorted list to drive the host check scheduling decisions, which means all or the majority of devices at a particular site are being checked at once. With all those ICMP packets going down a long thin WAN link that may be close to 100% utilisation, we are seeing all the devices at the site go down at once, then come back up as soon as the next check is run in a more staggered manner. I have checked the source code and the host list Nagios uses is sorted after reading the config files and the scheduler routine simply walks the linked list of hosts, and adds them into the schedule. My ideas to solve it... - Modify check_icmp with a wrapper script or similar that adds a random delay to the ping check to avoid the mass of packets (OK but will still lead to events where all the randomness adds up) - Modify the Nagios source code and recompile to remove the sorting of host lists (suboptimal) - Increase the thresholds for ping timeouts etc (doesn't really let us track latency of each site as it's then affected by the ping grouping) Any ideas from the community that'd be useful? The host_inter_check_delay_method just needs tweaking to higher than the smart value (currently 1.5 sec because of our reasonably high number 600-700 hosts) to stagger the checks over a more reasonable period... http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/configmain.html#host_inter_check_delay_method Its not ideal as it'll be checking each device sequentially by alphabetical order in roughly the same time period, but it will at least give more of a chance for each device to get its ICMP replies back before the next one is asked. I'm using Nagios 3.3.1, and trying to setup different notifications for different hosts and services. I have 2 types of notifications, via sms and e-mail and I don't want to receive sms about paper jam in my printer, but i want to receive e-mail about it simultaneously I want to receive sms notifications from my web-servers for all services. Unfortunately directives "host_notification_command" and "service_notification_commands" is described only for contacts, but not for hosts and services. Could you help me to resolve this problem?
