I actually have oracle client installed:

# rpm -qa | grep sqlplus
oracle-instantclient11.2-sqlplus-11.2.0.3.0-1

I have now brought across the shared objects from the db server and symbolically linked them to /usr/lib. I now get the following when attempting to connect......

# /usr/local/instantclient_10_2/sqlplus <username>/<passwd>@<ip_addr>:1521/SSID
Error 6 initializing SQL*Plus
Message file sp1<lang>.msb not found
SP2-0750: You may need to set ORACLE_HOME to your Oracle software directory

There is, but you'll save yourself a lot of heartache if you just installed the Oracle client on your Nagios machine. IIRC you can obtain it from Oracle as part of your maintenance, gratis...
