I thought I'd pass along an announcement about a new project in sourceforge that allows you to configure any .NET application to forward it's log errors straight to Nagios (via the nsca service) by passive check.

This appender allows you to take any .NET application that uses log4net for its' logging, and configure it to work with your Nagios server. No recompile necessary. This is an extremely easy way to start monitoring windows clients without writing some exotic plugin.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/dotnetnagiosapp/

It was based on the Java NagiosAppender ... https://sourceforge.net/projects/nagiosappender/ , and it's configuration reflects that.

Also, here is an article on how you can configure your log4net (or log4j) client so you don't need to know exactly what host it will be running on ...... http://www.novell.com/communities/node/4131/application-monitoring-made-easy-java-applications-using-nagios
