turning off service inheritance of host settings?

Nope. But a patch to make it optional with a setting in nagios.cfg,
preferrably overridable on a per-service basis, would be accepted if
it was well-written.

A lot of other people find it really convenient, which is why the
change was introduced in the first place. I guess you can't please
everyone.
