Does anyone have event log monitors that *work*?

That's a lot of the reason I'm getting so frustrated with this -
I don't really feel like I'm doing anything out of the ordinary.
I simply need to look for specific event IDs within the last X
time interval.  That really seems like a very basic need for
people doing network monitoring, and it's just driving me nuts
that I can't get what I believe to be such a basic thing done.

I REALLY appreciate all of the help/recommendations I've received,
and I'll try some of them on Monday and we'll see if I can get
my event IDs alerting properly.  :)
