Mail notification problem

Hi Allan,

Thanks for writing... our test environment is as follows.

Server is Windows 2003 Server with 2GB RAM, we downloaded Fully Automated
Nagios from http://fannagioscd.sourceforge.net/drupal/

Using VMPlayer we created a new virtual machine and installed using the fan
iso image.

Nagios version 3.0.6.

After full installation we set up IP, routes and dns and access using the
web interface.

Installed NSClient++ in 2 windows servers and edited the nsc.ini file also.

edited the nagios.cfg file and windows.cfg

we entered the mail address for notification to be send to in contacts.cfg
file. the mail id is an intranet id and is in the same network as the nagios
ipaddr. is there any other file where we have to enter smtp settings and
all... we haven't set the mail server settings anywhere couldn't find where
that has to be set!! mail server ip is 192.168.3.240 and nagios server ip is
192.18.3.241.

and when we give nagios verification we get the below error. telnet also
resulted in connection refused.

we strongly suspect that mail settings are not complete.. but donno where to
enter those details. the only entry we made is adding sysadmin at toonz.com in
contacts.cfg file. nowhere we have entered the mail server ipaddress!!

Please advice.... after this we have more queries!!! :-)

ananth.

It might help if you shared:
1) your Nagios config (all of it)
2) your email config
3) the result of a test by telnetting to your mailserver and faking a
mail transaction similar to what you're trying to do.

This might seem fairly intuitive to some, but not to others, so I'm
explicitly suggesting. In general, detail is useful -- if you're
afraid to spam a maillist that reaches thousands, then simply provide
the same detail at a URL where it can be downloaded, and just give the
URL in your message.

NOT providing detail merely means people may have to ask for it --
ultimately delaying your solution -- or waste time guessing.

As Dave Stern points out, it might not be a Nagios problem if your
mail server -- for whatever reason -- won't let the nagios user or the
Nagios server box send a message... ie it's not Nagios' issue if the
mailserver refuses, regardless what attempts are made.

Please ensure you have your mailserver administrator onboard with what
you're doing.

If the collection of this background data and discussion with your
mailserver admin resolves the issue, please let us know :)
