processing performance data in passive checks

I have nagios working with pnp4nagios in sync mode.  Performance data is
captured by pnp4nagios correctly from active checks.  However, it doesn't
appear that nagios is calling the service_perfdata_command when processing
passive checks.  Is there some parameter I missed?
