You could create a new check_command with the higher acceptable load.  
At the start of your backup process, send the CHANGE_SVC_CHECK_COMMAND  
external command to nagios with the higher threshold check_command. At  
the end of the backup process, send the same external command but  
specify the lower threshold check_command.
