Problems getting data from remote host with nrpe

Good morning folks!

I am trying to get my Nagios 3.0.4 configuration setup with NRPE to
remotely monitor the status of a process on my remote systems. I
followed the configuration for NRPE on both the Nagios server and the
remote system and have it very close but am stumbling over the final
piece. I have the remote system able to work with the nrpe daemon and
that is all good. When I try to do a simple check_nrpe from my Nagios
server I am getting:

CHECK_NRPE: Error receiving data from host.

I tried to telnet to the port on the remote system and was successful
(telnet remotehost 5666). This means it can't be a firewall issue or any
problem with routing. The log on the remote system shows the nrpe daemon
starting up and exiting on the completion of the check.

I know this must be something very simple that I am missing. Can someone
point me to something that can help me resolve this issue?

Thanks in advance!

Larry
