shoot not sure what is happening - cant start nagios (account unavailable)

not really sure what happened here...I tried your suggestion but still same results, once I edited the etc/passwd file and gave nagios a valid shell I could stop & start the service successfully.

[root at dns /]# vi /etc/passwd
[root at dns /]# service nagios restart
Running configuration check...done.
Stopping nagios: ....done.
Starting nagios: done.

Try this: mkdir /var/spool/nagios chown nagios:nagios /var/spool/nagios It looks like the directory does not exist and since the init script runs nagios as user nagios, it can't create it.
