RedHat5.3 has old nagios version

RHEL doesn't ship nagios by default, so it's probably the repository
you're looking in lags behind.

There are a number of 3rd party repositories that ship Nagios, so you
may need to look for others. For example, the RPMForge repository has
nagios 3.0.6 in it.
