question about host/service notification_period

I'm running Nagios 3.06.

If I have a host definition as follows:

		define host {
			host_name			FOO
			address			FOO
			...
			notification_period	period_1	# let's
say it's everyday but Monday
		}

and then

	define service {
		host_name			FOO
		service_desciption	BAR
		...
		notification_period	period_2	# let's say it's
everyday but Tuesday
	}

If service "BAR" fails on Tuesday, it's clear that it would trigger a
notification. If service "BAR" fails on a Monday, would it still send
an alert? That is, does the host's notification_period matter at all
for the service sending a notification?

I thought I'd understood that if the host was in a period of scheduled
downtime that that would effectively block the service notification, but
I thought that while very similar, scheduled downtime wasn't the same as
a limited notification_period.

I'm trying to setup recurring downtime windows using
notification_periods which works traditionally. However, it's somewhat
more of a pain if I have to track down each host's services (there's a
lot of overlap) and specify the same notification_period for each
service. It's much easier to just indicate that for the host (only).

Thanks

Mark
