how to get rid of "Pending" in Status Map? Nagios 3.0.5

Thanks for your reply, Patrick.    I've tried to force a host check,
both through the CGI ("Re-schedule the next check of this host") and
through the CLI (by writing "[time] SCHEDULE_HOST_CHECK;myhost;time"
to nagios.cmd)  But it still says Pending.

How can I get nagios to do the host check?
