Can anyone help me to findout and how to configure Mysql with NAGIOS to
store data?As Nagios with Apache can not store huge amount of data .

But can i view the historical data without running apache by a nagios
command line interface without parsing log files?

No, the cgi's are the only provided interface for that. There are no
command-line reporting tools included. grep and less of the log files
for basic stuff;  one of the reporting addons at nagiosexchange.org are
your other options. There's also a third party command line interface at
nagiosexchange (Utilities->Terminal) but I think it just shows current
states.

There are utilities do that yes. In the /usr/local/bin/Nagios (at least
in my install, your path may be different) there is a nagiosstats binary
you can run. There are options for mrtg (-m) or csv (-c) output. Note
that this only gives you performance data, and not data on individual
checks of hosts and services. As Marc stated you will have to look on
nagiosexchange.org for utilities that do those sorts of functions.

Hi folks,

I have another question for you all that i haven't been able to resolve.

I want to run a python script on my monitored hosts using the nrpe
command. 

On my server I am running the following command:

# /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_nrpe -H 10.10.10.45 -c
loadscript_check_error_log

Every time i run the command above then i get the following error:

"NRPE: Command 'loadscript_check_error_log' not defined

On my monitored hosts, I've specified the corellary command in
/etc/nagios/nrpe.cfg, then restarted the service.

# command[loadscript_check_error_log]=python /home/username/script.py

Am I missing something? Does the command[loadscript_check_error_log]
actually have to be a valid plugin in the plugins directory or am I
defining the action of running the script in this file?

Note: This is the only command in my config that is not working for me
so unlikely a service issue but rather something wrong with my config.

Is python in the path on the particular server? Try using
/path/to/python and see if you have success.

Is there really a "#" at the beginning of the line?

You should remove it as this character indicates the beginning of a
comment, therefore everything after will be ignored.

Also, make sure the daemon is loading the right configuration file and
not another located in /etc or /usr/local/nagios/etc, ...

Even on the "command[loadscript_check_error_log]" line (which you
wouldn't have seen at a command line)?

You should also always define your commands with absolute paths, both
for clarity and security reasons.

When I typed python on the command line it drops my into the python
interpreter.

Regardless, I went ahead and specified it in the command:

command[loadscript_check_error_log]=/usr/local/bin/python
/home/jesterj/report_loadscript_error_log.py

now when i run the check_nrpe command from the server I get "could not
run command".

$ sudo /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_nrpe -H 10.10.10.45 -c
loadscript_check_error_log

Could not run command

Thoughts?

I just chown'd the file for nagios.

$ sudo chown nagios /home/jesterj/report_loadscript_error_log.py 

$ ls -la *.py
-rwxr-xr-x 1 nagios jesterj 3156 2008-10-31 21:55
report_loadscript_error_log.py

I'm now getting a different error after i fixed the path issue.

$ /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_nrpe -H 10.10.10.45 -c
loadscript_check_error_log
NRPE: Unable to read output

I just pulled this error up in the manual and it sasy the following
about the error: "NRPE: Unable to read output"

"/home/jesterj/" is probably chowned to 700 anyway so the NRPE daemon
won't be able to access and execute it anyway.

Try running it manually with sudo to see the actual result:
sudo -u nagios /usr/local/bin/python
/home/jesterj/report_loadscript_error_log.py

Also, you should copy your script in a more appropriate location such as
/usr/local/bin or even /usr/lib/nagios/plugins if you have installed
Nagios on a Debian or Ubuntu server.

You can also try to start NRPE with "debug=1":

"How to go about debugging other problems...

When debugging problems it may be useful to edit the NRPE configuration
file and change the debug=0 entry to debug=1. Once you do that, restart
the NRPE daemon if it is running as a standalone daemon. After you try
using the check_nrpe plugin again, you should be able to see some
debugging information in the log files of the remote host. Check your
logs carefully ? they should be able to help provide clues as to where
the problem lies..."
