nagiosql - nagios 3.x - hosts configuration in directory

I have setup nagiosql as it fits my needs well as having the config in a 
db - however the only sticking point i see is that the configuration 
files for hosts and services are individual files within directory's 
rather than all in a single config file.

I have tried something like

cfg_file=/etc/nagios/hosts/*.cfg

however this creates an error such as

Error: Cannot open config file '/etc/nagios/hosts/*.cfg' for reading: No 
such file or directory

and equally

cfg_file=/etc/nagios/hosts/

does not work - anyone got a handy hint for this?
