question about active and passive logic

Hi list,

What is the difference, if any between, a active check that can also  
receive passive controls and a passive check with freshness_threshold  
? Example :

active check

check_period                    24x7
max_check_attempts              5
normal_check_interval           240                 
retry_check_interval            1
active_checks_enabled           1
passive_check_enabled           1
check_command                   check_dummy!0!No messages in last 6 hours

passive check

check_period                    24x7
normal_check_interval           240
active_checks_enabled           0
passive_check_enabled           1
check_freshness                 1
freshness_threshold             240
check_command                   check_dummy!0!No messages in last 6 hours
