We run it on some public-facing IP Addresses, however we use a firewall
such as shorewall to limit connections to port 5666 to only certain IP
addresses.

It's basically a firewall rule that states:

DROP EVERYTHING 
	UNLESS:
		IP ADDRESS IS AN AUTHORISED IP
