Hi, Andy. This set of plugins used to have a notify-by-jabber plugin for
this purpose, I believe.

I've never implemented it, but do remember seeing it.

You'll have to install the Nagios::Plugin module available on CPAN to
use their plugins. I use their check_yum and check_linux_raid plugins
and they work well, so you might want to check out the notify-by-jabber
script included in the tar.
