Checking host up without ping

Hi list

I swear I've seen a way to do this this before but I just can't remember where and I can't seem to find it. Isn't there a way to check to see if a host is up without having to ping it? I have a switch that we don't allow ICMP return but I'd still like to have nagios tell me if it's up. Thanks!
