First, tell your client to allow at least some ICMP.  Dropping all ICMP 
will likely cause issues, see:
http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1122#section-3.2.2.

Failing the adoption of that sage bit of advice, you could use the 
check_udp plugin to hit an arbitrary UDP port for connectivity.
